Hi.
There is a talking magazine in the UK which is available every month called soundaround www.soundaround.org. In this magazine they have sunrise and sunset times. Recently some people said that they didn't like this feature and the oppinions i heard were very interesting so i thought that it would be interesting to see what people think in this site as well.
You might wonder why i put this in daly living.
Some people in the magazine said that for a blind person it is very useful to know the sunset and sunset times especially if leaving alone because they would know when to put the lights on during the night and close the curtains etc.
So my question here is if you are interested about sunrise and sunset times and if you are leaving alone it would be nice to know if you are terning on your lights during the night etc.
Also you could share with us where do you find out the sunrise and sunset times if you are interested.
I personally use two websites. www.bbc.co.uk/weather for the UK when i was there because it covers most cities and areas and also www.timeanddate.com for Cyprus.
Personally appart from the security issue i am also interested about different countries sunrise and sunset times especially for 21st of June which is the longest day and 21st of December which is the shortest day. I find it interesting to read how long or short the days are in different countries.
So if you know these times about your country or area you can share.
I hope you find this topick interesting and i look forward to read what you have to say.
Hi Nikos
I had never thought about blind people needing to know the times of sunrise and sunset, but the bit about knowing when to turn on lights and close curtains is interesting. I have enough light perception to tell when good light is coming through the windows, and besides that, I don't live alone. But I imagine knowing sunrise and sunset times would be helpful to some.
Just this morning I wanted to know my local weather forecast so entered on the link for weather on MSN and typed in my city. In addition to the weather forecast, it gave me today's sunrise and sunset times for my city.
Hi Becky.
I didn't think of the lights and curtains either. I was interested for sunrise and sunset times long time ago but the reason was that i wanted to know approximately when do the birds would start and stop every day. But i also found interesting the fact about lights etc. Personally if i was living alone i wouldn't use lights at all and i would think that i would save electricity but now thinking about it a house without lights appears as it is empty so thieves would think that it is an easy target lol.
Birds around here start making way too much noise long before the sun comes up. LOL
I'm not too bothered about the times of sunrise and sunset, because I can see enough light to know when it is dark, or almost dark. I think that muslims or other religions would find it useful to know these times, though, especially like last month when it was Ramadan for example.
i used to get sound around, and it was the only part of the magazeen i was actually interested in. i think it can be very helpful
It's helpful if you are planning something and don't want to be out after dark, or maybe you do. Depending on what it is.
It's interesting to see what time it gets dark in the winter months, compared with the summer months.
Ok below i have the sunrise and sunset times for England and Cyprus for the longest and shortest day of the year and i hope you find them interesting.
You can compare the two and see how they are different. In England i am giving the time for Scarborough the city i was studying which is north. At south of England times are different.

I heard on the sound around magazine, I think it's called, that you get the times for sunrise and sunset all the way through the month. It also tells you the kind of moon we'llbe getting for some days, like new moon, first quarter of the moon and last quarter.
I've just got a braille copy of the 2008 Almanac, which lists all the sunset and sunrise times every few days (obviously not every day), the different phases of the moon and when the eclipses will happen. There is also a religious calendar and a calendar of what happened on a particular day in the past. I haven't read it all yet, but it looks interesting. The only thing is, the phases of the moon and the sunrise aned sunset times and eclipses are only for the UK.
